Lights
without an earth
Often
with properties that were built before or during the 1960s it
is found that the lighting circuit does not have the green and
yellow earth cable. You will usually find just the black &
red (now blue and brown) live and neutral cables. This means that
your lights do not have an earth. Although not being illegal,
this can be dangerous should your lights become faulty. A common
way to fix this problem is to have an earth cable added to the
circuit by paying an electrician to re-wire your house, though
this is an expensive job.
The
other solution is to purchase double insulated or class 2 lights.
These kinds of lights do not require an earth as they have been
especially designed not to need one. The covering of the cables
is extra thick to prevent exposure of the live wires should a
problem occur. Double insulated lights are used heavily throughout
Europe but not so much within the UK. That said, they are available
in this country though most lighting retailers will not know what
you are referring to when you ask them.
Because
of this extra protection class 2 (double insulated lights) are
still available in many styles and finishes and made of metal
just like normal lighting. At Warmmead we have a specialist website
that stocks only lights that dont require an earth. You can view
this site and order from it by clicking below.
